Chapter 17

Addie stretched out her jean-clad legs and tapped her high-topped boot toes together. No matter how many times she had been asked to wait in these hard plastic chairs, they hadn’t grown any more comfortable. She glanced at the clock behind the reception desk as the second hand ticked by and turned into minutes—fifteen to be exact. She shifted and stared at Officer Adams, willing her to look up from the paperwork she was obviously using as a distraction from Addie’s intense gaze. How could she not have felt the daggers Addie was thrusting in her direction? When the buzzer on the intercom sounded and the officer picked up the telephone receiver, an instant wave of relief crossed her flushed face.

“Miss Greyborne,” she said, still avoiding eye contact, “Chief Chandler can see you now.”

“Thank you,” Addie replied briskly as she swept past the desk into Marc’s office.

“Sorry to keep you waiting,” Marc said, rising to his feet. “I was on the phone with the DA.” He waved toward a chair. “Have a seat.”

Addie glanced back over her shoulder as she went to close the door and detected a flicker of the officer’s tongue. Did she just stick her tongue out at me? She closed—banged—the door closed. “What’s with her? She’s made it clear I’m not welcome here, and she doesn’t like me.” Addie glowered at the door, strutted across the office, and settled into one of the wood framed chairs. Her chair, as she used to consider it, but . . . that was a long time ago and since then there had been many changes. The new desk officer just being the latest one she was going to have to get used to.

“She’s okay. Adams is just having a hard time adjusting to how we do things around here.” He folded his hands on the top of his desk. “Like some other person I know.”

“What? You mean me? And if you’re referring to what happened this afternoon—”

“Addie, you threw me out of your house, and might I remind you that I am the police!”

“I did no such thing. I only defended my cousin’s rights, and as the police, you should have known better.”

“As the police, I will tell you that it’s not looking good for your cousin right now, and I hoped we could get to the bottom of it before I am forced to arrest her for the murder of Jared Munro.”

Oh dear. Addie blew out a soft breath and wiped the palms of her dampening hands across the knees of her jeans.

“Now what was it that you needed to see me about that’s so urgent?”

“I have a new theory.”

“Of course, you do.”

“I’m serious, and I think when you hear it, you’re going to be impressed.”

He sat back, eyeing her, and clicked the top of the pen on his desk. “Okay, go ahead and impress me.”

She leaned forward and pinned her gaze on his skeptical brown eyes. “What if there was something hidden in the briefcase?”

“If that is the motive you’re going with—”

“I am.
